The dialogue that opens the preface — the priest spreads his hands and raises them at Sursum corda.
Præfationem incipit ambabus manibus positis hinc inde super Altare: quas aliquantulum elevat, cum dicit: Sursum corda. Iungit eas ante pectus, et caput inclinat, cum dicit: Grátias agamus Dómino, Deo nostro.
The priest lays his hands on either side of the altar and raises them a little as he says Sursum corda; at Grátias agámus he joins them before his breast and bows his head.

The Preface runs straight into the Sanctus; the silent Canon begins the moment it ends.

The Preface comes to its end. The priest joins his hands before his breast, bows, and says the Sanctus in the same voice, the server ringing the bell meanwhile. At the words “Benedíctus qui venit in nómine Dómini” he straightens up and signs himself with the cross from forehead to breast. The Canon begins immediately after, said silently.

The priest uncovers the chalice, genuflects, takes the host in his right hand and, holding the chalice in his left, signs the cross with it three times from lip to lip of the chalice.
