The dialog that opens the preface — the priest spreads his hands and raises them at Sursum corda.
Præfationem incipit ambabus manibus positis hinc inde super Altare: quas aliquantulum elevat, cum dicit: Sursum corda. Iungit eas ante pectus, et caput inclinat, cum dicit: Grátias agamus Dómino, Deo nostro.
The priest lays both hands on the altar, one on either side, and raises them a little as he says Sursum corda. At Grátias agámus he joins them before his breast and bows his head.

The Preface runs straight into the Sanctus. The silent Canon begins the moment it ends.
Deinde disiungit manus, et disiunctas tenet usque ad finem Præfationis: qua finita, iterum iungit eas, et inclinatus dicit: Sanctus. Et cum dicit: Benedíctus, qui venit, signum crucis sibi producit a fronte ad pectus.
The Preface comes to its end. The priest joins his hands before his breast, bows, and says the Sanctus in a moderate voice while the server rings the bell. At the words “Benedíctus qui venit in nómine Dómini” he straightens up and signs himself with the cross from forehead to breast. The Canon begins immediately after, said silently apart from a few sentences spoken aloud.

The minor elevation closes the Canon. Only the Per ómnia sǽcula sæculórum is heard aloud.

The priest uncovers the chalice, genuflects, takes the Host in his right hand and the chalice in his left, and makes three signs of the cross with the Host from rim to rim of the chalice.
